What Distinctive Feature Analysis Shows

Each sound is a bundle of features such as [+voice] or [+nasal]. Only some of them are needed to tell a sound apart from all the others. The rest are redundant because they follow from the ones already given. /n/ needs only [+nasal +alv].

Rules In Feature Notation

The same features describe sound changes. The plural ending becomes /z/ after a voiced sound, and alveolar /n/ becomes /m/ before a bilabial in ten boys. The tool writes each change as a rule, X → Y / Z.
